Population Size and Distribution in India
People are a nation’s greatest resources. Nature’s bounty becomes significant only when people find it useful. It is people with their demands and abilities that turn them into resources. People are, therefore, the greatest asset and resource of the nation. Hence human resource is the ultimate resource. Healthy, educated and motivated people develop resources as per their requirements.
Distribution of Population: The way in which people are spread across the earth surface is known as the pattern of population distribution. More than 90 per cent of the world’s population lives in about 10 percent of the land surface. The distribution of population in the world is extremely uneven. Some areas are heavily populated, while some have hardly any people. The way in which the people are spread over the surface of the Earth is known as population distribution. Thickly populated regions of the world are those that usually enjoy an equable climate, where there is adequate rainfall to allow the practice of agriculture, and where the land is flat and the soil is fertile.
The number of people living per unit area (sq. km) in an area (state or country) is called population density of that area. India’s is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. After Bangladesh and Japan, it is the third most densely populated country. India’s population density in 2001 was 324 persons per sq km (this increased to 382 persons per sq km in the 2011 Census).
Population is low in places where the climate is inhospitable, like the high altitude region, extremely cold zones, sandy deserts and in the dense evergreen forests of the equatorial region.
They also differ in their education level, age and sex. It is therefore necessary to check at regular intervals, the size and other characteristics of population.
CENSUS is the process of taking account of total number of people in a country. In India, the census is taken every 10 year.
